Did You Know…What Truly Matters?
Recently I got an email that was entitled “Did You Know”. There is actually a series of these emails which introduce a whole host of “Did You Know” items of information, all of which overwhelm the reader with the fast paced, unending, highly significant changes that are taking place around us every day. This particular “Did You Know” was an extract from the Annual Report of Sony Corporation for this year. The facts are astounding. For instance try this one on for size. Did you know that the top ten in-demand jobs in 2010 did not exist in 2004? Or, did you know that if you are one in a million in China there are 1, 300 others just like you? Or, did you know that there are more “honors kids” in India than there are kids in America? Did you know that we are currently preparing kids for jobs that do not exist using technology that hasn’t yet been invented, in order to solve problems that we don’t know are problems yet? Did you know there are over 200 million users on “My Space”?
In essence we are living in exponential times. There are 31 BILLION searches on Google every month. Using the radio it took 38 years to reach a market of 50 million people. Using television it took 13 years. It took 4 years using the internet; the IPOD 3 years. Using Facebook it only took 2 years to reach an audience of 50 million people. There are 5 times more words in the English language than during Shakespeare’s time. I think you get the point. Again and in bold print – WE ARE LIVING IN EXPONENTIAL TIMES! I remember well that in 1968 in my first year of graduate school that Father Andrew Greely, a Roman Catholic priest and theologian was writing that we would see exponential change at a rate that would be impossible to fathom. He was more right than even he could have known.
After reading all of this (and there is lots more that I didn’t even mention) I am all the more convinced that I work for the one organization, and the one boss who remains essentially the same through it all. The things of ultimate value never change. The things that truly matter never change. The God who is over all of life, including that which changes and that which never changes is the God we worship and who wants us to know that which is eternal. I wish I could create another PowerPoint or You Tube presentation to put on the web which lifts up that which is of lasting value, that which is more important than anything else and that which truly matters. Don’t be overwhelmed with all the changes taking place; root yourself in Christ.
“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”
