First, Old fence posts are powerful reminders of the passing of time. All things change. What is here today is only temporary, nothing lasts forever, not even fence posts.
All things come and go, all things fade away sooner or later, even the strongest fence post made of the strongest of the hardwoods. The Bible reminds us that nothing lasts forever except for the Lord. “Lift up your eyes to the heavens, look at the earth beneath; the heavens will vanish like smoke, the earth will wear out like a garment and in its inhabitants die like flies. But my salvation will last forever, my righteous will never fail.” Isaiah 51:5. That which is eternal is the Lord, his love, his presence, his caring will be with us from the day we are born until after life on this earth is gone. All things come and go, only God is forever.
Secondly, the old post reminded of qualities we need for ourselves. Long ago when we lived in the country I learned that farmers liked to use the hardest and strongest and longest lasting wood possible for their fence posts. It was a lot of hard work putting up fence posts and the farmer didn’t want to repeat the process any more than was necessary. There are soft woods and hard woods and even with the hard wood family there are certain hard woods that are stronger and more durable than others and those are the ones the farmer used for his fence posts.
God, like the old farmer only wants to use the best and the strongest wood for his work. The difference is that God measures the best and the strongest differently than does the world. The world thinks that “strongest” and “best” have to do with physical qualities while God determines them by spiritual qualities. In fact, the Bible is filled with example after example of God calling on and using the smallest, slowest, most unheralded people instead of all the gold medal winners the world uses. If you want to be of use to God then become and remain the kind of strong, spiritual, lasting kind of people that God needs for his kingdom.
Funny how an old fence post could remind me of such important things. May we all pay a little more attention to the world around us and may we continually be thinking in everyday examples and ways that God speaks to us. It was just an old fence post but so much more.
God Bless You All
